You might have heard that most newer vehicles are now requiring full synthetic engine oil - with this change, our mechanics have been receiving a lot of questions about engine oil and why full synthetics are better, why they cost more, and if they are right for specific vehicles. Dad's Garage is here to help you navigate the wonderful world of engine oil and choose one that works best for you!
Why Choose Full Synthetic Engine Oil?
Times are a changing and so are engine oils. It's no surprise that engine oils are being designed to be more effective, but what kind of benefits do these pricier oils offer? Synthetic oils definitely have advantages over conventional oils, including less oil breakdown, more protection against extreme temperatures, and combating build up and sludge/deposits. Not only is synthetic oil better for your vehicles engine, but you get the added benefit of more time and miles between oil changes. Most of the time, you can get by with an oil change every 6 months/7,500 miles to 12 months/25,000 miles (depending on the brand and type of synthetic oil that you use).
This is why synthetic oils are called high performance, but it doesn't come without a higher price tag. Synthetic oils typically cost about three times the amount of conventional oil. As previously stated, a lot of newer vehicles are requiring the use of synthetic oils. You can find out if your vehicle needs synthetic oil by checking your owner's manual or we can check for you during your next appointment. If you aren't required to use synthetic oil, you may be wondering if you should make the switch. Here are a few reasons synthetic oil may be right for you:
If you live in an area with extreme temperature shifts (hello, Midwest). The changes from extreme heat in the summer to bitter cold in the winter can be hard on your vehicles oil. Synthetic oil can benefit you because it reduces oil breakdown.
If you have an older vehicle. Now this one is tricky, synthetic oil will definitely reduce engine sludge but if you spring a leak, the oil is pricey. Proceed with caution.
If you put off oil changes, synthetic oil is a great choice because with some brands, like AMSOIL, you are only required to get one oil change per year (or every 25,000 miles - whichever comes first).
Synthetic Oil Brands
There are a ton of engine oil brands that offer full and semi synthetic engine oil but one tops the rest - AMSOIL. AMSOIL is top of the line when it comes to full-synthetic engine oil and that's why it's our #1 recommend to our customers. The biggest benefit of AMSOIL, besides it being high-performance, is that it is going to save you time and money. Using AMSOIL means you will only have to get your oil changed once every 12 months or 25,000 miles - whichever comes first.
